Papa Westray is a small island in the north of Orkney. Its water supply system was established in 2000 and connects five wells to 56 residential properties, including short-term lets, and an additional 11 facilities, including the Co-op, hostel, and school.

Day-to-day normal operating costs and charges means that the community-owned system, run by the Papa Westray Community Council, is “absolutely a sustainable model, financially self-sufficient – except for the occasional requirement for assistance for capital improvements.” (Councillor Graham Sinclair, 2021.)
